Many parents believe they must choose between being a strict authoritarian who commands fear, or a permissive parent whose boundaries crumble under pressure. True gentle parenting is neither: it is holding high standards with equally high warmth.
The 3-Step Boundary Framework
Whenever an unwanted behavior occurs, follow this simple formula:
- 1. Name the Desire: “You want to keep throwing the toy truck across the living room.”
- 2. State the Boundary: “Toys are for building and playing, not for throwing at walls.”
- 3. Offer the Alternative: “You can roll the truck on the carpet, or we can throw soft beanbags into the basket. Which one do you choose?”
If the throwing continues, step in calmly with physical presence: “I see you’re having trouble stopping. I’m going to put the truck on the shelf for now to keep everyone safe.” No scolding, no anger—just steady leadership.
